Sant Joan d’Alacant has a university hospital and the Miguel Hernández University’s health sciences campus, with its faculties of medicine and pharmacy, inside the municipality. If you have come to work or study there and rent a room in a shared flat, your bedroom door may well have a lock of its own. Most of the time that is a comfort. Occasionally it is the door between you and your phone, your wallet and your bed.
First, rule out the easy explanations
- Is it actually locked? Many room locks have a latch that catches when the door is pulled shut, and a separate lock that needs the key. If only the latch caught, a flatmate with a spare key, or the landlord, may be all you need.
- Is there a spare? Landlords who let rooms often keep a key for each one. A message costs nothing.
- Is a window open? On a ground floor, possibly. Above that, do not even think about it.
Cards, knives and kicks: why they backfire
Credit cards and knives slide in films. In real doors they chew the frame, bend the latch and sometimes lock it harder. Kicking a room door splits the frame, which costs more than any locksmith. And taking the handle off rarely helps: on most room locks the mechanism is inside the door, not behind the handle.
Who pays, and who decides
The door and the lock belong to the landlord. If the lock has failed by itself, it is reasonable to ask them to sort it, or at least to agree before you call someone. If you simply left the key inside, the call-out is usually yours.
Either way, tell the landlord. A short message (“locked out of my room, key inside, calling a locksmith, OK?”) avoids arguments later about a door that was opened without their knowledge.
Opening a room door: the short version
You show that the room is yours: the room contract or the landlord on the phone. Then the lock is opened, almost always through its own keyhole or by slipping the latch. Room locks are simple, and a clean opening leaves them working. Only a very unusual lock needs replacing, and you are told before anything is done.
If it keeps happening
A room lock that catches every time the door closes is a trap. Ask the landlord about a lock that only locks with the key, or keep a spare with a trusted flatmate. If the flat’s front door has a lock nobody is sure about, that is worth raising too: in a flat that changes tenants often, nobody knows how many copies exist. And if the flat came with a safe that nobody can open, a keypad safe in a rented flat covers whose job that is.
